Children's Education

Christ & Grace offers many educational and fun opportunities for children. Christian Education provides creative programs for all ages. All teachers are trained through the Safe Children Program, which is required by our Diocese.

The nursery program on Sunday morning is for infants to children 3 years old. The goal of the Nursery program is to provide a safe, healthy and pleasant environment for this age child. We currently staff our nursery with a paid professional worker along with a youth assistant. All nursery workers have completed the Safe Church training as required by the diocese. Our nursery is well equipped. Nursery care is available during the 10:30 (10:00 during the summer) Sunday service and during the Christian Education hour (9:30 -10:30) from September to May.

Sunday classes are offered during the academic year – from September, beginning the Sunday after Labor Day, and ending in May, the Sunday before Memorial Day – for everyone from age 3 through adult. Classes are from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m.

• Preschool - 5th Grade: Currently One Room Sunday School, Grow Proclaim and Serve, is our curriculum which provides material for our teaching staff to prepare centers of learning with a focus of comprehensive Bible Study. Our teachers (staff of six) are present each Sunday in a rotating fashion and prepare for our hands-on learning environment.

• Confirmation Classes: Preparation for the Rite of Confirmation is offered during the academic year for sixth graders. This class begins in the fall and culminates in the spring with a visitation from our Bishop who confirms our candidates during our worship service.

• Youth: Students in grades 7-12 meet every Sunday during the academic year for fellowship and study. They use the Sunday lectionary readings and/or current events as a basis for their discussions. Volunteer teachers assist the Youth Minister in leading this class.

This program takes place during our 10:30 worship hour, September to May, for children up to 7 years of age. Children gather in the church with their families and after the children’s sermon, they process together to the Chapel. During this 20-minute session, children are encouraged to use their imaginations and their sense of wonder while engaging in play using paint, paper, play dough, building blocks, story books and other mediums. Seasonal music and an occasional video are provided to enhance this time for supervised free play. The children return to the worship service for communion.

While children are welcome at both services, the 10:30 service is our primary family service. A children’s message is given every Sunday at this service. Worship bulletins for children ages 3-12, which include coloring activities and pencil games based on the lectionary lessons for that particular Sunday, are provided. Youth take roles as acolytes and once a year lead an entire service, including messages for the children and adults. Lackey Hall Worship with Eucharist is provided quarterly at 9:30 in Lackey Hall, which provides an informal setting for family worship.

Our fellowship ministry programs provide opportunities for fellowship and formation for pre-school and elementary-age children and their families. The first Wednesday night of each month at 6:00 p.m. we gather for a potluck supper. Movie nights, ballgame field trips, music at the pavilion, breakfasts, luncheons, picnics and socials are offered throughout the year. Check our calendar, weekly bulletin or newsletter for these scheduled activities.
